NEW MOVIES 12/21/18
Aquaman’s half brother, the king of Atlantis, plans to start a war with the surface world. Aquaman needs to go back to atlantis and find the magic trident that will allow him to defeat his brother and make him king. Jason Mumoa, Kal Drogo from Games of Thrones, once again plays Aquaman. Nicole Kidman, Willem Dafoe, and Amber Herd are also in the film. It’s not a bad movie. There is some decent action. The humor doesn’t always work but there are a few funny lines. It’s enjoyable but you probably won’t remember much about it in a year or two. Compared to other DC Comics movies it’s great and 2nd only to Wonder Woman. Compared to normal movies, it’s 3 out of 5 stars.

Bumblebee is a prequel to the other Transformers movies and is the closest that any of the movies have ever gotten to being like the old 80s cartoon in terms of looks and feel. In this movie Bumblebee gets injured and hides out on earth disguised as an old Volkswagon bug. Hailee Steinfeld repairs him without realizing that he’s a transformer. She’s pretty surprised when her car turns into a 10 foot tall robot. The two become friends and Steinfeld tries to keep Bumblebee hidden from the Deceptions and the US army which is being led by the WWE’s John Cena. This is the best Transformers movie that has been made. It still isn’t perfect but there are some pretty cool fights among the Transformers. This movie is also the funniest and has the most heart out of all the Transformers movies. 4 out of 5 stars.

Marry Poppins Returns takes place years after the first movie. Michael is grown up and has his own kids. He is now about to lose his house unless he can prove that his father left him an inheritance. Right when he’s freaking out his old nanny Mary Poppins shows up. She watches his kids and does all the crazy magical singing Mary Poppins stuff. Emily Blunt plays Mary Poppins this time. Lin Manuel Miranda from Hamilton is also in the film as well as Colin Firth and Maryl Streep. Dick Van Dyke from the original film has a cameo. The film is getting pretty good reviews but because the first one is held in such high regard this one has some lofty expectations to live up to and not every critic thinks its living up that legacy. A decent amount of critics do think it’s a pretty good sequel though. The film is based on material in the Mary Poppins books written by author Pamela Travers.
Jennifer Lopez works at a walmart type store. Shes sick of that crappy job but can’t really do anything else because she doesn’t have a college degree. Someone doctors up her resume and sends it out. She ends up with a big time high paying job but now is stressing out about proving she can actually do the job without the degree. She’s also worried that someone is going to find out that she’s not qualified. This comedy also stars Leah Remini and Vanessa Hudgens. The critics aren’t loving this one. The film is being called dumb and just not very good. It’s probably going to get forgotten with all the other stuff coming out this week and next week.
Steve Carell from The Office stars as Mark Hogancamp who is an artist that builds army scenes using large GI Joe type dolls. He gets beat up by a group of Nazis which leaves him pretty messed up physically and mentally. While he tries to recover he gets lost in a fantasy world and starts seeing the dolls come to life. It’s written and directed by Robert Zemekis who did Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit?, and Cast Away so there are some big expectations for this film. Unfortunately the critics don’t like it. The common complaint is that the story had lots of potential but that the story was told wrong in the film. This movie is based on a true story and the documentary about Mark Hogancamp is supposed to be a much better film.
